Local Search and the End of the Cold Call

First, I want to wish everyone a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend.  Hopefully, everyone will be able to find time to relax with family and friends.  I will be moving a 20-ton rock pile to my backyard.  Let’s also remember those who have died in our nation’s service.

“For love of country they accepted death…”  ~James A. Garfield

For those of you unfamiliar with our services, Tiburon Interactive is a full-service, internet marketing agency.  We have a designated team to focus 100% of their time to local search marketing for small business owners.  Why do I bring this up?  According to an article on Website Magazine, “Local search ad revenues hit an all-time high last year, driven primarily by better product integration across search engines, especially Google.  Revenues will continue to grow as better targeting, increased mobile usage and improving integration drive up local search activity,” says Matt Booth, senior vice president and program director of BIA/Kelsey.  By 2015, local search revenue is expect to increase 10% annually.  As a small business owner, put yourself in the shoes of the consumer.  As the purchase and usage of smartphones and tablets increase, so will consumers browsing for local businesses on those devices.  In the end, this will benefit small businesses looking to increase their brand awareness both locally and regionally.

Who loves cold calling?  I hate it!  If you do, my hat goes off to you.  Yes, as a former advertising executive for Fortune 500 companies, I had to do it.  If I didn’t do it, I didn’t have a job.  With that said, do you really think with the emergence of social media outlets like Twitter, eliminates the cold call?  For you true hunters out there, has social media marketing eliminated the cold call?  Having many years in the trenches, I say no.  But a new startup company, ecycler.com, wanted to grow awareness about their business without turning off the potential customer.

“We spent a lot of time cold calling or direct emailing,” said Craig Robertson, co-founder and CEO of ecycler.com. “We would catch people when they were busy and they didn’t want to talk to us.”

I know I said “no” to the end of the cold call, but I say “amen brother” to Craig.  Social media outlets like Twitter are allowing businesses to interact with each when they want to talk.  Where was Twitter in 2002?  Looking back, some of my largest client relationships were established via email and not from a cold call.  A simple email helped bring down any barriers.

If you have time, send us your stories how social media helped you create a strong client relationship.  Thank you for your time this week.  Again, have a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend.

Thank you,
